MJRU New Zealand Tour 2017

Now in its forty-second year, the Manly Junior Rugby U11 & U12 Tour to New Zealand has proven to be a memorable event for many Marlins over the years, with the boy’s experiences no doubt cementing their love for their chosen sport forever.

Current Marlin Harry Bergelin took part in the tour when he was just 11 years old, together with team mates Dan Alley & Adam Crerar, and he looks back on his experiences fondly. “The MJRU Tour holds fantastic memories for me, as a team we had a great time and learned a lot. It’s great to see the tradition continue!”

So let’s hear from our roving reporter, Mr Jack Donnan.

“On April 7th 48 excited and nervous boys met at Keirle Park at 4:50am to begin their 10 day tour in NZ. After landing in Auckland their first stop was Eden Park. It was amazing to run on the field.

The next day they faced Takapuna, unfortunately we were beaten 19-12. The next day we visited Auckland’s Sky Tower. Later that day we travelled to Rotorua. It stank. The next day we played Kahukura and beat them 79-0.

The next day we went to the Thermal Pools then we visited the gondolas. The next day we travelled to New Plymouth. Then we later played Taranaki and defeated them 34-0. The next day we went to Lower Hutt and played the Hutt Old Boys. We beat them 57-0.

The next day we flew home!!!

The best experiences were being billeted, swimming in a cold lake, staying in the marae, having a hangi for dinner, meeting new friends and seeing their unique culture.”

It's fair to say that the Marlin's future is in safe hands, and we are hugely fortunate to have the best Junior Rugby network around!

Our thanks go to all of the parents and volunteers of the MJRU, who work tirelessly to ensure these guys become our future.
